Afu Lia Billy: most powerful voices for women’s rights

From fleeing violence to driving national change, Afu Lia Billy as President of the National Council of Women, stands as one of the Solomon Islands’ most powerful voices for women’s rights.

Her Australia Awards scholarship was more than an opportunity — it was a lifeline that helped her rebuild her life and protect her daughters.

Returning home, Afu co-founded the Family Support Centre, now a cornerstone in the fight against gender-based violence.

“Violence tried to silence me, but I turned my pain into purpose. Every girl deserves safety, opportunity, and a future free from fear.” — Afu Lia Billy.

Australia stands with the Solomon Islands during the 16 Days of Activism to end gender-based violence.
