Australia Awards alumna Williamina Barile has returned from the 32nd Australian and New Zealand Society of International Law (ANZSIL) Conference with fresh ideas to amplify Pacific perspectives in global legal debates.
A Bachelor of Laws (Honours) graduate from Monash University, Williamina used the platform to highlight how “silence” in international treaties can marginalise Pacific voices — particularly in critical areas such as use of AI in marine systems and lack of greenhouse gas (GHG) regulations for small fishing vessels.
“Our livelihoods are tied to the sea. Modernisation brings opportunities, but also the responsibility to address environmental impacts,” she said.
Her participation underscores the importance of including Solomon Islands perspectives in shaping fair, inclusive, and sustainable global legal frameworks.
