Fiona is leading the change in protecting our oceans for future generations.

Happy World Tuna Day! Introducing Fiona Meke, a passionate ocean advocate and Australia Awards Solomon Islands alumna.

Sponsored by the Australian Awards, Fiona studied Marine Science at the University of South Pacific (USP), a course that deepened her understanding of ocean sustainability, fisheries management, and the importance of community engagement.

In highlighting the vital role our ocean resources play in the Pacific Islands economy, Fiona shared, “Tuna isn’t just fish, it’s our livelihood, income, culture, and connection.”
Now a lecturer and researcher at Solomon Islands National University, Fiona continue to teach traditional knowledge with science. She is currently working on projects to tackle illegal fishing, promote sustainable practices, and address human rights issues in the tuna industry.

Fiona is also empowering the next generation, especially young women, to find their place in marine science.

“There’s space for you, whether in the lab, on a boat, or in the classroom,” she encourages.
