First Nations Australia Cultural Immersion 2025

Australia Awards Solomon Islands (AASI) organised a two-day cultural immersion experience in Sydney for 15 scholars from universities across New South Wales, deepening their understanding of First Nations Australian perspectives.

During the program, scholars participated in the Tribal Warrior cultural cruise on Sydney Harbour, explored the Blackbirding exhibition at the Australian National Maritime Museum, dined at Indigenous-owned restaurant MIDDEN near the Sydney Opera House, and took part in a guided walk through Redfern.

The experience featured traditional dance, storytelling, and cultural practices, while also providing scholars with an opportunity to reconnect with one another, reflect on the shared histories of Australia and the Solomon Islands, and celebrate their identity and national pride.

A similar two-day program was organised in Brisbane for 14 on-award scholars studying at universities across Queensland. Activities included a visit to the Queensland Museum's South Sea Islander exhibition, which explores the interconnected histories of First Nations peoples and Pacific Islanders, and participation in a Cultural Capabilities Workshop that encouraged open reflection on Indigenous identity, knowledge systems, and resilience.
